Back in December 2015 at one of our Wednesday night meetings the assembled DEFine members agreed that we should attempt to put on an event that would be aimed at modellers and provide an opportunity for a social event. Going by the feedback we have received so far its mission accomplished!
We opened the doors at 10am on Saturday morning and had a steady stream of familiar faces and some new friends that we have made due to the event. With a mixture of excellent layouts and some top quality demos (no traders) we managed to achieve what we set out to do and that was to get people talking about their projects, commenting on ours and generally talking about the hobby we are all so passionate about. Many of the demoers have reported being hoarse at the end of the day and the buzz in the room all day was due reward for the DEFine team who organised the event. We were impressed by the distances some people had travelled to get to the event and we were glad to enable them to say it was a worthwhile journey. It was also a lot of fun and thick skins were brought into use with all the friendly banter being dished out and taken in good fun. We were delighted to see a couple of our DEFine founder members manage to attend in the form of Gareth Bayer and Chris Messer. It was great to see Gareth again and Chris managed to join us for over an hour and by all accounts had a great time. A big thanks to our resident NHS expert Dave Roome for taking care of the arrangements that ensured Chris got to see the exhibits.
We are indebted to our friends who volunteered to support the event with either a layout or a demonstration. Without them we would have had no event. Thanks is also due to Carrie Wilson for doing entry door duty and to Sylvia Degnan for being behind the refreshments counter all day to make sure everyone was fed and watered as required.
It goes without saying that we really appreciate and thank all the modellers who joined us for the day. You played a big part in the success of the event so thank you all for your attendance.
By closing time at 4pm we thought we were going to have to throw people out as the chatting and socialising was still ongoing, but thankfully by just after 5pm it was time to put the lights out on what was a very enjoyable day. A group of our friends then retired for a beer at a boozer in Smisby whilst the rest of us stayed local and said cheers at the Risley Park.
Will we do it all over again? Who knows. We will be doing a review of what we can do in the future in coming weeks and keep everyone posted.
Some pictures follow that hopefully sum up the event, I hope you see yourself somewhere if you were there!
